San Diego Weekend Trip | Our Recommendations
Torrey Pines Trail
Is two days enough time to have an enjoyable trip to San Diego? Back in February, we decided to head west from Yuma over a weekend to find out. We left early on Saturday morning, and would be making the trip back to Yuma on Sunday evening.
We knew that we would have to have a good plan if we wanted to see the city in such a short time. We also knew that driving and parking our F-350 around the city probably wouldn’t be a great idea. Instead, we took the truck straight to our hotel, and called an Uber to take us to Old Town. It was there that we boarded our trolley from Old Town Trolley Tours. What better way to see the city than to have the trolley drive us around, tell us about the sights, and allow us to disembark and explore several locations?
USS Midway
With several trolley stops to choose from, we had to be strategic with the time we had. We opted to stay on the trolley as it passed the Maritime Museum and the USS Midway. While both looked interesting, we just didn’t have the time to fully explore those. However, we did get a decent view and some history from within the trolley.
The first stop where we did get off the trolley was at Seaport Village. This area provided a fun mix of shopping and dining as well as some open areas to explore with a fun atmosphere. We grabbed a late breakfast and explored some of the unique shops before re-boarding the trolley.
Coronado Beach
Our next stop was on Coronado Island. We spend some time walking through town, exploring some shops, and eventually walking past Hotel del Coronado and out to Coronado Beach. Once again, we probably could have spent more time here, but we felt that the time that we did spend was sufficient, and we really weren’t feeling rushed.
On Saturday evening, we found a fun and unique way to explore the Gaslamp Quarter. We chose to take the Brothels, Bites, & Booze tour by SoDiego Tours. This tour was an absolute blast. We were able to learn about the history of that section of the city, as well as sample the cuisine from several of the local restaurants.
La Jolla Cove
The plan for Sunday was to take the truck to Torrey Pines, check out the Torrey Pines trail, then take the eBikes down to La Jolla Cove. The trail at Torrey Pines looked amazing, but was also a bit more ambitious than what we were planning. So after a short time there, we took the bikes on the five mile trip south.
La Jolla Cove was a very fun area to explore. The sea cave was neat to see, and we were thrilled when we rounded the corner and started to see all of the sea lions on the beach.
From our perspective, we really did get a good overview of San Diego in our weekend there. Granted, if we wanted to explore any of the museums or the zoo, it would probably require a bit more time. Really, the only thing that we probably would have changed was to forgo the bikes, and just stuck with Uber. Even with the bike lanes, riding in the city proved to be a bit more sketchy than we were comfortable with.
